We could say so much on the benefits and goodness of Chanting and Kirtan, from the power of the sacred ancient formulas or Mantras, to the amazing capacity of sound frequency and energy to recreate reality, to the healing and spiritual power of dissolving individual separation into ONE voice, or the Joy of bypassing the mind allowing the fuel of emotions to transform itself in the cauldron of the voice… Chanting HAS to be experienced directly, you need not any knowledge, no beliefs, nor the perfect pitch, simply let your heart in voice take you where you have never left. Chant! Traditionally Kirtan is a call and response participatory chanting experience, the word ‘kirt’ means to name, to communicate to celebrate, to praise and to glorify, derived from the Bhakti Yoga Tradition of India , the path of union through devotion, that uses the repetition of Sanskrit Mantras to invoke the energy and attributions of the divine. The singing of Bhajan is also a part of the spiritual music tradition of India, refers to the singing of songs in prayers or hymns to the divine (rather than the repetition of God’s name), its root ‘Bhaj’ means to worship, to revere and to love. Both are what we call devotional music, practiced Now days in a variety of modern musical styles thus appealing to so many more people across the world. Using the voice to express feelings and emotions, as a bridge to unite the heart with the spirit, is one of the most enjoyable experiences one can have, Kirtan is a raft of music into the heart and into the present moment. It is a play that unites our voices with others in what does not require any skill or preparation is a play because is free and spontaneous and is fueled by our immediate state of being transporting us in a journey of transformation into the mystery of oneself. Playing by singing, repeating words joyfully without rehearsal free and spontaneous using the voice as an expression of our hearts. A play where music is the vehicle that uplift the spirit in an invitation to join a caravanserai that is going on for all infinity where we are welcomed to a feast of love and joy, a timeless caravan of music in perpetual repetition of syllables and words that reverberate through the Cosmos embodying the very thing they call forth and invoke, the Name-That is. Taping into the sound of the name of the divine, calling it into the present through our own voice, blending, taking part of it, merging, letting the voice be the sacrificial fire that burns all separation. and aligning as we are with the form of the divine, its musical form, its sound, singing any of its infinite names and becoming that. This is the play of burning separation, surpassing and transcending the notion of separation and manifesting the form of the heart, the self, God, the divine, through sacred sound, the sounds that resonates with what is true and real, the play that moves the river to discharge into the ocean, the ecstasy, the joy, the peace and the happiness of it. Happiness is essential, anything that promotes and gives happiness to the heart should be encouraged, raise the flow of energy into the heavens to fuel us with inspiration to enquire, to love, to appreciate, to honor and adore the mystery of the existence of this life, of who we are. In this increasingly unnatural society, surrounded by all sorts of unnatural demands and pressure, singing our heart in Kirtan (chant, song, devotional music) is Medicine that recall our Natural State and retrieve our soul, to merge with the invisible, cure our pain and charge us with untapped enthusiasm to participate in the perpetual circle of love loving itself through everything and everyone, called life, called really living on Planet Earth. Revealing our hearts to ourselves, hear it resounding in our voices, can wake us up into the love that is, that we are, awakening us to remember the flavor of the inner chamber and invite us to live from there. Is a Play to so easily deceive the daily struggle of “modern” life, the stress and all its painful consequences by the mere act of using one’s own voice in song…Ah!!...pure joy, immediate relief… it is making love alive and palpable through music the simplest healing art to create more happy people and community.
