What do I mean by New Sounds? Well, interesting question. On the surface, it's about just that: a new sound in my music. There’s a lot more jazz. "Entropy" was written for a classic jazz quintet plus guitar, but there is something else at play here. This is the next step in my conceptual exploration of modernized blues. The ideas I started in A Blues For Joy are maturing in New Sounds. This album is really the continuation of those ideas. All of this is a little funny, considering some elements of this album are very "retro" in nature. Look at the album sleeve you're holding. It's modeled after classic jazz album covers of the sixties. But the aesthetic, while certainly cool, isn't the focus. The record is about continuing to grow beyond my blues roots. Let's face facts: I am and will always be a blues guitarist. Hand me a guitar and say "play something,” and the first thing I'll play is a blues riff; it's who I am. Yet, I don't feel like my music need to stand still. That would be the antithesis of what the blues are all about. Every time I start work on a new album, I try to find a new "thing.”…an idea, a narrative, a motif, whatever you want to call it. New Sounds is new. It’s stuff I've never done before…stuff I've always wanted to try. It is change from growth.
