About The City Never Sleeps The core of ”City” is Warfield’s ambitious and highly successful three-section suite that gives the disk it’s title and celebrates the nocturnal energy of New York. Consider it an urban revision of ”A Night on Bald Mountain” in which the awakening spirits of the night are vigorously beneficet. The program is elegantly simple. “Prelude” finds the sun setting and the city changing from wakeful day to sleepless night. In the second segment ”The City Never Sleeps” the natural light has faced and the electrified city takes its place. “Tentigo” reflects the frenetic restlessness as the night moves inexorably toward the light. When it stops suddenly it hasn’t really left. The stars are still there behind the sunlight, waiting, and not particularly patient. Warfield’s big band voice speaks strong and true.
