Coast & Ocean… he’s so effing cool Coast & Ocean, aka Alex Johnson, aka Lil Chay Jay aka a super sick kid bringing something completely funky and fresh to the Australian music scene. Alex has been making music all throughout high school but in the last year or so, his hunger and passion to fulfill his dream of being a successful artist a reality has seen him soar. Growing up in Lake Heights on NSW’s South Coast, Alex is no stranger to the laid back, chill nature of living in a beach town, which is evident in his music. However this seemingly happy go lucky guy also knows what it’s like to struggle; feeling passionately about real issues such as police brutality, the treatment of asylum seekers, politics, mental health, past relationships and the natural ebbs and flows of life and incorporating these into his art. When I first heard Alex, it was an intimate jam session with a bunch of friends after a night out. He is the type of artist who makes his audience feel like he is singing personally to them, whilst still making his audience feel like they are a part of something; something big and something meaningful and something important. I would attribute this to his ability to freestyle, drop random beats and be super sexy and slick whilst doing so. Coast & Ocean are touring at the moment, up and down the East Coast playing festivals, gigs, pubs and clubs as well as busking. Alex is an inspired, experimental, multi-instrumental, songwriter, rapper musician who incorporates loop pedal rhythms, beat boxing and acoustic percussion with a mix of soulful melodic vocals… making him a stupid cool and talented young artist. Coast & Ocean has released his ‘My Mania’ E.P and is currently touring it… This new single “Doobies Girl” is the first of two from the upcoming album “Sandcastle Mansion” due out later this year. Currently touring in Nimbin, Coast & Ocean will be making his way back down to Sydney and the South Coast stopping along the way in Newcastle from early-mid May. Supporting him on this tour is his girlfriend and singer songwriter Ali Morgan, who you can check out on Soundcloud. To summarise Coast & Ocean in three words, I would say he is honest, cheeky and witty. Catch him at one of his shows as he tours up and down the east coast.
