Parts & Labor专辑介绍:by Stewart MasonIn 2006, Brooklyn experimentalists Parts & Labor released a six-track vinyl EP called Escapers on the experimentally minded Broklyn Beats label: an entirely electronic set, it was a conscious departure from the trio's usual style. Escapers 2: Grind Pop, the follow-up, is nearly as conceptually extreme: this half-hour set consists of 51 songs, exactly six of which break the one-minute mark (and then, not by much). The instrumental tracks were recorded live in the studio, with the lyrics written and vocals overdubbed later in a separate session. The album's press kit claims Escapers 2: Grind Pop as Parts & Labor's tribute to '80s hardcore gods like Minor Threat and Hüsker Dü, but these songs entirely lack the manic intensity of the former and the pop suss of the latter. There's an implicit smugness to this record, a sense that Parts & Labor are saying to the listener "Well, of course it's just unstructured noise, that's the point." That may well be, but there is interesting unstructured noise and uninteresting unstructured noise, and this misguided experiment is, unfortunately, firmly in the latter category.
