简介
Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen are two of folk music's most respected writers and performers. As the Boston Globe has noted, "She is one of the finest pure ballad singers in folk today, a wondrously clear and honest vocalist. He is a prolific songwriter who achieved respected tenure in the tough climes of the Los Angeles recording industry." Together, they are known for tight harmonies, intricate guitar and concertina arrangements, and varied material: original songs (Steve is author of the classic Darcy Farrow), traditional ballads and tunes, and songs penned by other contemporary writers. In a review of one of their albums, British Folk Roots magazine commented "Still just about the classiest duo around, with more of their sublime traditional and contemporary folk...Lovely music." On their new album Home By Dark (2012), Steve and Cindy cover a lot of folk territory, with songs ranging from traditional ballads "(The Two Sisters") to the quirky sensitilities of Flanders & Swann ("The Gnu"). They each contribute new original songs: Steve's country-tinged "California Zephyr" and title track "Home By Dark," and Cindy's "Birdsong" and "Seal Harbor," an eerie tale from the Maine coastal islands. Add a couple of concertina-driven tunes, a Quebecois traditional foot-tapping song, and songs written by friends Joe Carlson, Anne Hills, and Doug Johnson, and voila! The album was mastered by Scott Petito, who also plays acoustic bass, and features backup by Peter Davis (tenor banjo, sax), Will Patton (mandolin, acoustic bass), Pete Sutherland (piano, fiddle), Jennifer Weeks (oboe), and Jack Williams (guitar).
