The recording contains multiple resonances: that of the vocal chords, of the harp strings, and of the tabla - but most importantly, the sensitive emotional resonances embodied in the songs of Rabindranath Tagore. These songs, beloved by Bengalis but virtually unknown outside of Bengali culture, represent fusion music from a century ago, combining elements of classical and folk Indian music and tunes from the British Isles. The harp, played by Abigail Horn, frings to this recording an instrument uniquely suited to Tagore's music but rarely used in accompaniment in the past - and Tapan Modak's melodious rhythms on the tabla resonate with the harp.
