Exuberant and expressive, the 6 Oboe Trios by Handel present most richly conceived, imaginative three-way musical conversations among the two hautbois and the bass. The set is recorded here for the first time on period instruments which bring out the rich earthy colors of the musical protagonists. Loosely cast in the 'sonata da chiesa' mold, the trios follow a slow-fast-slow-fast movement sequence. In most Sonatas, though, the second slow movement emerges directly from the preceding fast one. Abolishing the traditional breaks between movements, the composer instead transforms the affect (mood) without interrupting the musical flow. He thereby can draw his musical arches more broadly and more dramatically. With their vibrant prowess and technical glitter, these beautifully drafted, vivid works offer a broad palette of affects that range from dejected melancholy to joyous thrill. As such, they clearly convey something of the theatrical spirit of the stage, where Handel reigned supreme.
