简介
The album, North Beach, is an eclectic collection of flute-led melodies driven along by strong percussive grooves. Lyrical trombone, acoustic guitars, sax and didgeridoo also feature. Mainly an instrumental jazz fusion album it has one vocal tune which is more African in nature - 'Keep Moving'. Brief description of tracks: First Wednesday: upbeat jazz fusion with flute, piano, percussion and drums Footsteps: flute and didgeridoo over loops and samples - funky number which starts with snowy footsteps recorded on a dog walk last winter. Sweet Jessie: flute, trombone, guitar, upright bass, tabla, drums - a gentle piece with a beautiful upright bass solo from Terry Pack and trombone solo from Mark Bassey. Written for our black Labrador, Jessie! Live Wire: dance track with flute over loops and synth bass and keys Proud To Be: pop number with horn section, led by flute and trombone with guitar breaks. Keep Moving: joyous African vibe with vocals, marimba, flute chorus and lots of percussion Bleu e neuf: blues form in 9/4 with extended improvised trombone feature. French feel Monkey: electronic fun with wild guitar solo and organ solo over drum loops Baka: three flute chorus, acoustic guitars, percussion, drums - uplifting, gentle and joyous. Inspired by the Baka Forest people in south-east Cameroon and featuring improvised solos on guitar and flute. Rich textures and harmonies on this acoustic instrumental tune. Sarah's Hour: upbeat Latin tune with flute and trombone solos Simeon: flute melody with guitars and percussion featuring lyrical solos by Simon D'souza (tenor sax) and Nick Burt (guitar). Think birds in flight on a sunny day. Acoustic instrumental. The process: I use Logic on Macbook Pro and record everything myself to start with – piano groove, flute melody, synth bass and guitar, with everything sitting on top of drum samples and percussion loops. I then replace some tracks with live players depending on the feel I want. Sometimes I decide it works best with live flute over loops and samples – 'Live Wire' is an example of this. Other tunes, like 'Simeon', are a combination of 'real' musicians and midi recorded material. On this track I play flutes and piano, Joss Peach has added some beautiful piano lines as well as percussion, Simon D'souza plays a lovely tenor sax solo - also with Nick Burt on guitar, Leia Fredriksen on percussion, and Alex Eberhard on drums. The album is definitely eclectic – a combination of Spyro Gyra, Massive Attack and Mike Oldfield! The genre is mainly jazz with three dance based numbers and an African vibe on Keep Moving. This track is the only one with vocals: Keep Moving, Find Your Passion, And Follow It. Good advice for anyone! I hope you enjoy North Beach as much as I did writing and recording it. Hilary Burt, Brighton, England
