The Catalogue Tapes Volume 5 Kensington Girl/Kingston Girl VARIATIONS ON A THEME As we were working these tapes we would make lists of people who didn’t write their own songs and might need a new song to fill out an album. We would match artists and styles to the songs in the catalogue. In the background at one of these brainstorming sessions as Bob Marley was playing on the radio, a light bulb went on. We all smacked our heads and thought...”We could have had a V-8.” Then another lightbulb went on: Reggae. Out of all the genres of music we were playing with, we did not have a reggae tune. Greg, Ray and I put our heads together and it made a loud clunk like coconuts banging together and Kensington became Kingston. Greg started to sing the song with a Jamaican accent. We recorded it for posterity. I was rummaging through old tapes and found this version hidden with some other oddities. We decided to add this ‘bonus track’ to this album. Yes, it’s totally fine to laugh at Greg doing this version of the song. We all did. We hope you enjoy it, too. Russell Calabrese June 2008 The Catalogue Tapes Vol. 1 thru 9 are all available now. We'll be posting a list of the songs in chronological order so you can make an iTunes playlist to hear them that way if you wish. Modern Technology- You Gotta Love It !
