简介
Growing up in rural Nebraska, Devin Jake's first musical influence was, no doubt, his mama. Many childhood memories for he and his brothers and sisters are those of her singing old school country songs along with gospel tunes you’d likely hear in a southern baptist church. Whether it was just her singing to them while they played in the tub or Sunday afternoons at Uncle Larry's. There she and her siblings would play songs like "Oh Them Golden Slippers," "Crazy Arms," and "I'll Fly Away." To carry on this family tradition, one year Devin spent his tax return money to buy a guitar. His mom then taught him to pick and sing using songs by her favorite singer, Dolly Parton. Music, however, was not the future he'd originally had in mind. He started studying dance at the University of Nebraska and shortly after moved to Chicago to continue following his dream. It was in Chicago that he first played live on a stage and realized that pickin' and singin' was what he truly loved. Devin landed a monthly residency at a local bar where he performed what he likes to call "Ol’ Lady Country." Songs by artists like Dolly, Loretta and Kitty just to name a few. It wasn't long until he started writing his own songs. Heartache and loss provided the inspiration for many in the beginning and he wrote his first gospel tune "Take Me Home" after losing his step-mother to cancer. The first track on the album “Jesus Tell My Mama” is a song about being down and alone in a new city asking Jesus to tell his mom everything is just fine. After a few years of playing the Chicago scene, he moved to Austin, Texas. He felt living in a city where country and bluegrass is prevalent would be a choice environment for a budding country musician to grow as an artist. There he has graced the stage with local artists such as Brennen Leigh, The Carper Family, Bill Carter, Will Sexton and Weldon Henson. He also plays regularly in some of Austin’s legendary venues. Places such as Hole in the Wall, The Driskill Hotel, The White Horse, Mean Eyed Cat and he has a weekly residency at Intercontinental Stephen F Austin. His most recent accomplishment has been the recording of his first solo album “Jesus & Mama.” It is an americana “gospel” record that musically falls somewhere between country and bluegrass. It showcases Devin’s songwriting and his love of all things Jesus and especially, Mama. The album ranges from original tunes that hold up to the old timey standards to some of his mama’s favorites like “Mama Tried, “Coat of Many Colors,” and “Knoxville Girl” He hand picked some of Austin’s finest musicians to play on the album produced by Austin’s own Stephen Doster. It was recorded and mixed by James Stevens at EAR studios in Austin, Texas.
