简介
On pianist Ben Haugland's second recording as a leader, he is featured in a quintet with tenor saxophonist Stephen Jones on his recording debut, veteran bassist Jay Anderson, drummer Chris Smith, and veteran trumpeter Scott Wendholt who has a stirring presence throughout. In addition to his fine skills as a pianist, Haugland shows some promise as a composer, having written some challenging material for this recording that successfully combines accessibility with musical sophistication. His driving post-bop opener "When Day Met Night" has an intricate, modern sounding unison line and terrific solos all around. In contrast, "Birds of a Feather" has an infectious quality, sounding something like a Cedar Walton composition. "Dreamscape" is a placid and melodic waltz, followed by the challenging, up-tempo "Second Sight." The album also features a few choice standards such as "Here's That Rainy Day," "A Weaver of Dreams," "Dedicated To You," and "Big Foot," which are also in good hands with fine solos all around. Haugland's piano style recalls at times Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Mulgrew Miller's distinctive sense of harmony and driving melodic lines. A Million Dreams is a positive step in the development of this fine musician.
