by Jack Rabid, The Big TakeoverThis dissonant San Francisco trio have been toiling in relative obscurity for two LPs on the Midwestern Amphetamine Reptile label, and perhaps a change to a more local-based operation won't alter that. But the music itself deserves better. Except when singer Imaad makes the only-occasional mistake of screaming in a demented style, this is rather creepy mood rock that isn't slow enough to be slowcore, isn't loud enough to be indie garage rock, and isn't insistent enough to be even really rock, despite its simple rhythms. More likely, it's post-punk atmospheric pop with slower tempos but really deep production that highlights the brooding, bubbling bass more than the guitar that is ever circling it. Not far off from what Idaho and Acetone are up to (California is the only breeding ground for this rather interesting approach), the thing I love about The Going Away Present is that its eight tracks seem to grow in stature as one long piece, as this stirring mood starts to get its hooks in you. By the time they get to the title track, you're sucked in. In fact, this would be exceptional bedtime music if it didn't grab your attention so much with exposure. Excellent. (P.O.
