Strings coax the piano to part with A Secret, next, but Bill’s intimate, taunting piano lines only reveal what he wants them to know. There’s no guessing, however, about If It’s Love, as sighing and swooning strings and a gaily decorative piano answer in the affirmative. In Once I Lived, Bill’s keyboard is fond and endearig as it tells the story of a life renewed by another love. Just For Tonight is upbeat all the way, with a lusty, forthright Latin beat that goes hand in hand with the romantic backdrop of moonlight and a star-studded sky. Closing the side is the title tune, As If By Magic, a neat trick that produces some fascinating byplay between piano and orchestra. In the Side Two opener, I Can Remember, Bill’s piano treatment is crystal clear, and polished-to-a-sheen, but the tempo immediately changes for the peppery Latin entry Querida Mia, with a bewitching orchestral accompaniment. Then, You Lovely Thing, next, proves that love will never disappear, in a rapturous rendition that projects a warm and luminous glow. Birth Of A Melody demonstrates lyrically that creating an impressive tune is a bit more involved than pulling a rabbit out of a hat, while Same Old Moon is a happy-go-lucky enchanter in which the spell cast by moonlight is much more romantic than meets the eye. Remember This, the closer, becomes a reflective piano pastiche, bedeviled by the charming interaction of flute and percussion.
