Montreal-based singer/songwriter Konner Whitney returns as Whitney K with his fourth official release, When The Party’s Over -- a follow-up to his 2016 album, Goodnight. The album offers austere observations of hedonism, gentrification, and religion in the form of poetry. Musically, Whitney expands his palette, bending from no-wave to country and back again. Having already earned a reputation among Canadians for being an evocative lyricist and engaging performer, Whitney K’s most recent work is indicative of his boundless evolution. It was the months leading up to the 2016 American election; Whitney, broke, hungry, and wrought with uncertainty, hunkered down with a 4-track cassette machine and began to record. Written, performed and recorded entirely in one week, the album is no less than inspiring, though challenging. The recordings were concocted in a mossy basement in Gastown, Vancouver which Whitney was subletting as a jam space. The space, a former Hell’s Angels hideout, revealed its history to the songwriter as he worked. Through bullet holes in the walls and elevator, Whitney was able to tap into what he described as a “lingering presence of the building’s past”. During his week in the basement fondly dubbed “Office Space”, Whitney slipped into a trance-like state which bordered on posession. Rather than fight the sensation, the songwriter allowed the space to be his guide as he worked unquestioningly. Through Whitney’s lens, listeners may begin to understand how the record’s bleak tone emerged.
