With the addition of the Fender Rhodes electric piano and combined with electric guitar, the only acoustic instruments on the recording are the acoustic bass and the drums. Winogrand was inspired to incorporate the Rhodes when he performed his piano trio in Gijon, Spain and there was no acoustic piano provided. Not wanting to use a synthetic keyboard, pianist Jacobo de Miguel requested he bring his Fender Rhodes and Winogrand agreed. From the first moment he heard the electric piano it brought to mind the sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Herbie Hancock and Chick Chorea introduced the Rhodes to the jazz world with Miles Davis on his groundbreaking record B**ches Brew. Winogrand is clear that his music is in no way comparable in style, shape or form to the 1969 B**ches Brew, but the sound of the Rhodes gives him and hopefully the listener of The Heat, a taste of that potent and nostalgic era. The organic sound of the acoustic bass contrasting with the two electric instruments is an important component of this recording for the composer.
