IY is a conversation, so talk and we'll listen; listen and we'll talk. IY is a friendship--a very old friendship. IY is a party that lasts a long time, with dancing and good people. Welcome. Chris Frank, Nate Terepka, John Zinder, and Dana Billings started playing together in 1999, at age twelve. They have not forgotten that music should make people feel alive, joyous like nothing else can, and they remind more listeners every song, every record, every show. THE NEW RECORD: In 2006, a reviewer declared of IY’s then-latest release: “Two Letters showcases a band that, on every level, is years ahead of itself. It'll be inspiring when their age catches up with their talent.” Shortly thereafter, the boys moved out of their rented house in Ithaca and were apart for the first time in nearly ten years. Chris moved to New York to study Philosophy at NYU. Nate dove into Psychology at Skidmore, but spent his first semester studying in London. John returned to studying Chemistry at Cornell, and Dana took a job at a recording studio and began playing drums for several other bands with musicians twice his age. They planned to set their dreams of career together aside and focus on other things, at least for a while. But they couldn’t. In between exams and adventures, Chris and Nate began to play their very first solo shows. Soon the boys were taking weekend trips to play to capacity crowds in New York (Bitter End, Sidewalk Cafe), Ithaca, and elsewhere, supporting acts like ZOX, State Radio, Tally Hall, Donna the Buffalo, The Horse Flies, Evan & Jaron, and Sim Redmond Band. Summer of 2007 found IY together in Ithaca again, and they got busy—first as the backbone of a production of HAIR at the Hangar Theatre, and then producing, recording, and performing on (Australian singer/songwriter) The Understudy’s latest full-length album. Shows abounded too, including a set at the Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance. As 2008 approached, IY felt ready for new record of their own. Time was short: they would have only three weeks in January to record. But the songs and sounds came quickly—easier than ever, better than ever. And for the first time ever, they came loosely. After years of playing precociously, IY was ready to just play. With For Fire, IY has come home. This is the record they have waited nearly ten years to make.
