But not wishing in any way to be known as a mere show band, the group spent the time honing its craft as well as its business acumen. This powerful 14-track reminder of the power of roots music is among the results and, having delivered nearly half of them at the Knutsford Court during the launch, one can surmise that expectations are now high as the public has been afforded a taste of the group's prowess. From the magisterial declarations of We Are to the musical pep talks of Rise Up and Relax to the lone concession to the riddim culture, Dance Vibes, the group is proficient at layering modern rock sounds with the convnetional roots reggae. perhaps nowhere more successfully than on the cautionary tale, Sticky in which Gayle's commanding yet compassionate vocals are countered by a screaming lead guitar and 'molasses-thick' drum and bass. The selections are genrally short (none exceeds four minutes) and there are spots when the band seems to stop just as it has opened up. But none of that detracts from the overall enjoyability of this effort and the sheer joie de vivre and love of musical pursuits come through on each track (It's hard to remain in a bad mood, after hearing Relax, for example). Run Around borrows from the 1970s Horace Andy classic Skylarking, for its intro (and in the chorus) before stating its message of warning to a straying partner. Brothers, the final track , reverses those sentiments encouraging the 'sisters to show them some love.' Whether in drive time or a stationary stiuation, Grass Roots is a good musical companion - not 'easy listening' in the derogatory sense but easy to relate to and grow fond of.
