简介
I first performed Piazzolla’s “5 Tango Sensations” at The Ravinia Festival in 1998. Comparing the score to Piazzolla’s recording with The Kronos Quartet, I saw how much improvising he did, especially in the 2nd movement, where all that he wrote for his bandoneon part were whole notes! He spent 10 years of his childhood and adolescence in New York City, where he became exposed to Jazz and classical music and started to play tangos on the bandoneon. A blend of Jazz improvisation, Tango spirit, and Classical composition runs through all of Piazzolla’s music. It was an amazing feeling to play this music on the harmonica. “Bordel 1900,” part of a suite called “L’histoire du Tango” was composed by Piazzolla for flute and guitar. My friend Dane Richeson and I recorded this along with “Café 1930,” another piece from the suite that appears on an earlier CD of mine. I recorded the 3 original Jazz tunes with my working band in 1998. First is the Brazilian/Jazz-styled “Amazonas.” Next, “To Me You Are A Song,” a ballad, which has been recorded by several other artists, including guitarist Fareed Haque. I wrote “The Piano Man Strut” after listening to a Studs Terkel radio show about the great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. I named the tune for a Chicago Jazz club where I played regularly in the early 1980’s. And finally, the duo with Anthony Molinaro. We have had a long and fruitful musical partnership starting in 1999, playing concerts all over the US and Europe. There is one CD, “The Molinaro/Levy Project Live.” Playing live brings out the best in both of us. In my mind, the Bach Chorale leads into and interweaves with the Beatles’ tune in a totally natural way.
