www.silosq.com Caerwen Martin Composer Clouds was written while Caerwen was on tour with Toni Childs, travelling around the Australian coast and outback. The different skies inspired her to take photos of clouds and write improvised compositions about the way the different environments affected her. Caerwen (MMusPerHons) is a cellist/composer/performer who works both nationally and internationally as a new music specialist and improviser. She is the recipient of the Catherine Mary Sullivan Scholarship for excellence, The Orloff Family Trust Scholarship, the Sir John T Reid Scholarship and the Atheneaum Prize. Caerwen has worked at major festivals and venues in Australia, Europe and America with some of Australia’s most celebrated musicians and actors. Current ensembles include Arcko Symphonic, Silo String Quartet, Bolt Ensemble, Ruth Roshan Tango Noir, The Modern Post Quartet, and The Birds Duo with Elissa Goodrich. Caerwen is the artistic director of Silo String Quartet, which she founded in 1998. Her compositions with SiloSQ are broadcast internationally both on radio and online. Caerwen is represented by the Australian Music Center as an associate artist. Caerwen also teaches composition and cello at primary, secondary and tertiary levels and is an ambassador for BeyondBlue. Silo String Quartet is the pioneer quartet for new string quartet repertoire in Australia. Silo has been regularly performing and premiering new Australian and international scores for nearly 2 decades since the group was founded by cellist/composer Caerwen Martin in 1998. From humble beginnings Silo has gone on to perform internationally and at many of Australia’s major venues and music festivals, such as the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, and has worked with some of the most celebrated Australian and international performers and composers. SiloSQ is highly regarded for it’s professional, dynamic, versatile style; comfortable in Classical, Jazz, Rock, Cabaret, Pop and Contemporary Classical genres. In 2008 SiloSQ performed with UK trombonist Barrie Webb at Carnegie Hall in New York presenting a program of new Australian and Asian compositions. In 2013 and 2015 Silo completed national tours with the Here Comes the Night show performing at major state concert halls and venues and as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Silo SQ has recorded 8 Albums including What We Talk About…, out on Crackbell Records, Clouds, for electric and acoustic string quartet, Luminal and Origami with David Chishom, Soaring at Dawn with Fiona Burnett released by ABC, Stuttershine, Butterfly Modernism by Eve Duncan, and After the Dark, a compilation of Australian and Asian repertoire. Silo SQ also features on the sound tracks of the feature film Lost and Found and the television series Serangoon Road. Silo String Quartet has performed and recorded with numerous popular, jazz and classical musicians such as Michael Kieran Harvey, James Hullick, Vince Jones, John Butler, Guy Pearce, Way of the Eagle, Owl Eyes, Hugh Jackman, Dj Spooky, Katie Noonan, Tim Freedman, Dan Sultan, Grey Ghost, Vika Bull, Joe Camilleri, Jennifer Kingwell, Borrowed Time Trio, Silvie Paladino and Karen Knowles.
