简介

Music education is not just important to the developing brain and social development, but it helps teach lessons about life and how to deal with the myriad of challenges and issues that present itself as we grow older. To have the ability to experience success early in life is an important step to a well balanced human being. In music, we can help our beginning students experience success early in their development. One of the most effective ways to learn is by listening and by imitation. At first, the young performer may not know why they are imitating the style and sound of what they are listening to, but it becomes apparent as we mature. Listening helps us get a “sound in our heads” and an idea of what exactly is a flattering sound for our instrument. Meaning, what is a french horn supposed to sound like. It’s true and it’s contrary to popular thinking, but easy music is much more challenging to play for an expert performer than difficult music. The challenges that present itself to the young performer is mostly: “How does a passage sound? How do I articulate this? What does this symbol mean?” Further complicating issues are that beginners rarely have an accompanist to rehearse with. We hope these examples will help your beginning students experience success in their performances as well as a solid example of how their instrument should sound. —Mark J. Morette
