Goolkasian is perhaps most notorious for his absurd work with the The Elevator Drops. “We would dress up as androids, attach flashing lights to ourselves, and bounce around singing. One day we spent $25,000 on a video and $5,000 to have someone touch up our make-up. We toured around the country again and again receiving glamourous praise. One night in Texas, I decided it was time to stop. Texas is giant and looking around I too felt big and capable of anything. It was there that I decided to leave. Driving home across country, it seemed the further I got from Texas, the smaller and more incapable I felt. When I finally returned home, I felt puny and hopeless. Nonetheless I was determined to build a studio in my apartment and make a record. In my dreams, the studio was grandiose. In my apartment, it was lopsided wood, old blankets and used cardboard. The ceiling is so low that I needed to crouch down rather uncomfortably to sing. In order to avoid passing out I used one hand to keep the cardboard studio door open. You see, the discarded blankets which I used for sound proofing, had grown moldy. Despite all of this, I am happy. I just close my eyes and try to remember that BIG feeling I had felt in Texas.”
