简介

"A fascinatingly beautiful showcase for Fry's musical influences..." DREAM magazine, Issue #9, June 2009 "I'd never heard Fry's music before, but I was instantly enchanted by the lilting sounds of his folk rock. His 1971 record Dreaming With Alice has been described as "acid folk," and I can see why. This was Fry's first-ever show in America... a belated appearance by a talented songwriter." UNDERGROUND BEE, Chicago, December 2008 "About as perfect an album as you are likely to hear all year..." Jeff Penczak, SHINDIG! May-June 2008 "My advice? Get hold of a copy of this album, pour yourself a large drink, turn down the lights and prepare to melt away under the spell of this exquisite creation." Mike Wilson, FOLKING, April 2008 “SHOOTING THE MOON is distinguished by a pared-back sound, a pleasingly elegiac mood that is sustained throughout, and a handful of top-drawer tunes.” David Davies, TOTAL MUSIC, March 2008 "SHOOTING THE MOON is a very well-produced mellow gem...bluesy, jazzy and folky at the same time with mandolins, acoustic guitars and smoky, sultry late-night saxophones backing up Fry's wise and seasoned voice...Dreaming With Alice may be the lost psyche masterpiece you want people to see on your record shelf, but my guess is Shooting The Moon is the album you're going to want in your stereo more often. Fans of mature, adult folk will be all over this album. Great album." Gordon B. Isnor, LEFT HIP, February 2008 “A late night delight to be taken with heartache and whisky 'n' ice.” David Samuel, SUBBA-CULTCHA, January 2008 When 19-year-old Mark Fry recorded his debut album DREAMING WITH ALICE for RCA in Italy in 1971 he never imagined that it would resurface three decades later as a sought-after cult recording, favourably compared to Donovan and the Incredible String Band, frequently bootlegged and described by The Unbroken Circle as a “defining masterpiece” of psychedelic folk. The long-awaited Sunbeam Records reissue in 2006 confirmed its status as an underground classic, and prompted Mark to return to the studio to record SHOOTING THE MOON, his first album in 36 years. In all those years away from the music scene Mark had become a successful painter, with several solo exhibitions of his work in leading London galleries. But what most art lovers (and most fans of ALICE) didn’t realise was that Mark had never stopped writing songs and playing what he describes as “bedroom gigs”. “For me, painting and music have always walked hand in hand”, he says. “They ebb and flow; one influences the other”. Mark’s 2008 CD SHOOTING THE MOON includes 15 songs for which he recorded all the guitar parts and vocals in his studio in the French countryside. Other parts, including sax, drums, bass, fiddle and pedal steel were added in France, Madrid and London by a small group of musicians working in close collaboration with Mark and co-producer Nick Russell-Pavier, The “lithe, spindrift guitar work” admired by The Wire is here again, this time with an unprocessed sound that perfectly reflects the simple poetry of the songs. • Legendary, enigmatic singer / songwriter • First new album in 36 years • More reviews and interviews at www.markfry.co.uk
