Tan Sleeve's fifth release, 'Too Big To Fail', their first since 2005's 'American Blood', is a howling meditation on age, obsession, the meaning of success, and the sacrifices people make for their passions. From their early beginnings in the millennium as a soft-rock duo acoustically picking on select cover songs from the last 50 years which they would pepper with their own Irving Berlin-by-way-of the Beatles originals, Lane Steinberg and Steve Barry have now evolved on this record into a fiery pop-fueled beast, much of this due to their reuniting with the original drummer from their first band, The Wind, Steve Burdick, who beats skins on seven tracks. None of this is to imply that this is a dark n' dreary record - far from it! - as the hip-shaking Yardbirds-style rave-ups of 'Got A Good Look At You' and 'Miss Mixed Signals' keep things groovy and dancing and the joyous but menacing 'Never Figure Out Women' and 'I'm The Fly' hits on never before rocked-out turf by these two. But the three songs that close out the album, 'The Bitter Enders', 'Fading Out', and 'We Try', are an unflinching portrait of what happens when young rockers with dreams of fame turn into adults with wives, jobs, and families and how those dreams are reconciled. Besides themselves, it speaks to and for their countless musical brethren, and though the sentiments may difficult to swallow, the music is ultimately triumphant, joyous, and redeeming.
