“Live! from Asbury Park” is the first solo jazz album released by Marty Nelson, a founder of the original Manhattan Transfer. Marty returned to performing live recently with a solo revue entitled “Some Sinatra, Some Scatting, plus…?” The show is a fun intimate evening of music and stories that features some of Marty’s favorite music (even including a medley of Marty’s memorable TV jingles). “Live! from Asbury Park” contains eight tracks from his live performance at Chico’s House of Jazz in Asbury Park in late 2010. Having worked as a record producer and freelance studio singer in New York for more than 30 years, Marty has sung on more than 2000 radio and TV commercials. He has also sung with an incredible mélange of artists – from being a ringer on some Village People albums, to singing back-up for Dion and Kenny Loggins at the Grammys at Radio City Music Hall, to singing on the PBS Great Performances Series of “West Side Story” with Leonard Bernstein, to singing backup on Sinatra’s “Trilogy” album. “Live! from Asbury Park” features Marty accompanied by four renowned instrumentalists from the NYC region: Gary Haberman (piano), Jimmie Young (drums), Boots Maleson (bass) and Tommy Labella (sax). Among the classic standards on this album is a unique version of “Send in the Clowns” with Marty accompanied only Boots on bass for most of the song. Tommy Labella plays a moving version of “All the Way” as the intro to “One for My Baby” (which can be seen on YouTube in its entirety, with Marty acting out the song in his trench coat and hat). Marty’s unique intro to “That Old Black Magic” sets up the extended scat version of this classic for wonderful solos by Gary, Boots, Jimmie and Tommy.
