-redrawblak (solo) EP- is composed of four solo improvisations by New Orleans saxophonist Brad Walker. Using a sophisticated array of electronics (pitch shifters, delays, harmonizers, and computer programs) to augment his alto and tenor saxophones, Walker creates four distinct landscapes of shifting textures, shimmering sounds, and visceral, intense improvisational lines. Light > Dark (tracks 1-2) is the most abstract and ambitious, opening with a whirlwind of whispers, clicks, and snaps that torrent into a screaming cacophony of saxophone and voice before finally settling into a dark pedal tone. From there a gradual crescendo of intensity leads the piece from calm into a raging inferno of sound. Soliloquy (track 3) makes deft use of numerous types of digital and analog delay effects combined with three pitch shifters and harmonizers to create a saxophonic monologue worthy of any of Shakespeare's greatest efforts. For Carly (track 4) uses a loop station to create a shifting, beautiful underlying texture for an extended, heartfelt tenor saxophone solo that brings the record to a dramatic emotional conclusion.
