The year of 1962 was one in which the first signs of a transatlantic shift in the balance of pop power began to be seen. The Beatles' debut hit and the formation of the Rolling Stones were indications that of the flow of musical talent, until now almost exclusively in an eastward direction since rock'n'roll was created in the mid Fifties, would soon be reversed. The British Invasion which started in 1963 and got into its stride in 1964, may have overwhelmed the American airwaves, but the richness and diversity of home-grown music like this measures up favourably to the all-pervading beat.
