简介
A kindly primate smiles broadly, proudly, beneath a NASA-emblazoned baseball cap. Is his departure imminent? Or has he returned to tell the tale? The 17 minute voyage through Counterpart's debut EP leaves little solid evidence as to the genesis of its sleeve and its name, but perhaps clues abound. Opening track "We All Fall Down" is replete with expansive guitars, and a conclusion envisaging Tuscon jets, warm jets, as it breaks up into a static wash. "You say I'm the enemy of common sense / And I say you are the universe" insists Daniel Davies, before "Bloqs" balloons into a warm chorus. The turbulent, spastic "Clatter", with its fits and starts of tub-thumping drums and rambunctious guitars - all at once gently permeated by a sloshing Tenori-on - breaks to leave a springing synth and cries of house fires and chemical equations. EP closer "Play It Straight", with its climactic fuzz guitars, synth trails and 16-bit snares, soars akin to the flyby tail of a shooting star. Or not. It might just be a monkey, in a funny hat, smirking.
