The thirteen songs on Released, written and recorded between 1989 and 1996, are adventures in songwriting and performance. They were written in the city and performed in the clubs of downtown New York, of that time - CBGB, Brownies, McGoverns, Irving Plaza, Nells. From the vantage of time, influences appear, - The Cure, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen’s album, Nebraska, The Stooges, but the music is original, neither referential nor reverential. Like folk or country music the words and music hold apart from each other, merge for a moment and then move away from each other again. The singer is attempting to identify himself in the characters and stories of the songs. The music makes everyday feelings into something else.
