Analyrical, “the only rapper with ‘anal’ in his name,” blazed through the tracks on “First Date” (cough, iTunes), his new album and, in my opinion, a definite keeper for fans of hip hop and casual chroniclers of the Twin Cities underground. Yes, we have hip hop in the Twin Cities. In fact, from my admittedly brief interactions with it, I’d be willing to say that we have some damn fine hip hop here in the Twin Cities. Atmosphere is the obvious dropped name, but there’s also Brother Ali, P.O.S. and a host of lesser known, but equally talented artists. Analyrical definitely fits into that group, though, if good taste is contagious, he won’t be a secret for long. “First Date” is definitely an album for those seeking emceeing over polished beats. That’s not to say that the beats aren’t there, though they skew more towards that live instrumentation sound, and further from Kanye’s slick, auto-toned booty bass. Think Sage Francis on “Personal Journals.” Standout tracks, in my opinion, are “Tick Tick” and “66612.” (Yeah, Minneapolis!)
