简介

Few groups in Seattle’s music landscape are capable of having a classic sound while constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s next like The Physics. The group has spent the better part of the last 10 years as a mainstay in Seattle’s hip-hop sphere. Comprised of three rap raconteurs from the city’s South End, The Physics are regarded by many of their contemporaries—Blue Scholars, Macklemore, Sol and Jake One, as perhaps the group that embodies Seattle hip-hop the most. Blood Brothers Gathigi and Njuguna Gishuru (Thig Natural & Monk Wordsmith) are the groups lead MC’s and are veterans at owning the stage. Justin Hare (Justo) lays the texture for all of the music as the band’s producer and he’s equally capable of offering up solid rhymes on top of his own production making him a double threat. As a trio they’ve played sold-out shows in major markets like LA, NY, Chicago and beyond while thoroughly repping Seattle everywhere they go. The Physics first gained recognition with Future Talk (2007), a 15-track LP packed with hooks and candid raps. 2009’s High Society EP marked the arrival of what has become The Physics’ signature musical sensibility of making hip-hop with a constant groove. In 2011, they dropped the acclaimed Love is a Business EP that featured the highly catchy tune “Coronas on Madrona” and saw the group’s sound evolving even further. By the time band’s the third full-length album Tomorrow People dropped in 2012, The Physics solidified their status in the upper echelon of Seattle hip-hop. Getting back to straight raps, beats, and hooks, the LP featured some of Seattle’s best like Jake One, Sol, Grynch, Vitamin D., J. Pinder, and more. The album’s eponymous lead single spent four weeks straight at no. 1 on KEXP’s hip hop charts, and, was featured on the front page of NPR.org. Never satisfied with the status quo, 2014’s Digital Wildlife album took the group in a markedly different direction. Considering Thig, Monk and Justo are all musicians by night, business professionals by day, Digital Wildlife serves as a perfect anthem for creative 30 somethings who have a 9 to 5 and 5 to 9. Sonically, boom-bap is replaced by actual singing from Thig Nat and lyrics that make nodes to love, lust and high fashion. Anyone paying attention can hear The Physics growing up and maturing throughout their deep catalog yet still managing to attract younger fans along the journey. 2015 is poised to be another big year for the group. With the latest single “About You” featuring vocalist Camila Recchio gaining a buzz, the band is prepping for their fifth album later this year. Now more than ever is the perfect time to stay tuned to what The Physics are serving up next.
