简介

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of The Fifes and Drums of Colonial Williamsburg The Field Music of the Virginia State Garrison Regiment, as The Fifes and Drums of Colonial Williamsburg is formally known, has its precedent in 1778 when the General Assembly established a regiment to protect the capital city of Williamsburg during the Revolutionary War. The fifers and drummers, or field musicians, of the regiment were typically boys too young to bear arms, whose primary purpose was to relay commands to soldiers in the field. This rich historical context led to the establishment of a fife and drum corps for Colonial Williamsburg in 1958. It has continued, uninterrupted, to the present day. Millions of visitors to the Historic Area have experienced the history of the American Revolution through the stirring musical performances of The Fifes and Drums. COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG’S FIELD MUSICIANS are drawn from a waiting list of young community applicants. Boys and girls can begin their education in military music at age 10 and will rehearse weekly for the next eight years. Through their art these young people interpret the role of music in the 18th-century military. Senior members teach these traditions to younger members. The Fifes and Drums appear in more than 700 performances each year. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is proud of each of these truly remarkable young Americans, past and present. They have come to symbolize what is best about our museum, our community, and our American history.
