For Joey Langlois’s third EP, Home to Me, the Montreal-based singer-songwriter seamlessly fuses a childlike authenticity with a lyrical wisdom beyond his years, addressing themes of love and relationships with a refreshing optimism that catches the audience off-guard. Invoking the song writing spirit of his influences, such as Keith Urban and fellow Canadians, Downhere, Joey’s melodic hooks and sincere lyrics invite deep reflections, whilst remaining upbeat and accessible. 2011 saw Joey move to the music-metropolis of Montreal, having begun his music career in Gatineau, Quebec. At only 9 years of age, Joey began his foray into song writing, commencing an enduring passion for the craft. He became an accomplished drummer and guitarist, and at the tender age of 14, he released his first self-produced EP, simply entitled ‘Joey’. The second EP was released in 2010, with his band SKYDIVE. Yet the move to Montreal marked a shift in the song writing process for Joey, which can be heard on each track of the latest release; from the maturation of content to the considered approach to the lyrical process, Joey aimed to “make every word count”, a quality often left wanting in songs of the same genre. The songs ‘Home to Me’, ‘Miss You’ and ‘Construction Paper’ explore aspects of love, longing and listening to good advice. His emotional honesty goes with a keen understanding of modern society, allowing the songs to convey profound insights through a popular medium, reminiscent of bands such as The Script and The Fray. Each instrument is allowed to shine and Joey’s voice is both commanding and comforting. As a whole, the sound of Home to Me is warm and inviting, with surprising life lessons awaiting the attentive listener. Joey has been performing across Montreal since August, with his new band, consisting of Alanna Martin on keys, Paul Cole on bass, Adam Varano on lead guitar and Justin Wiley on drums. The live shows reinvent the expected, jumping effortlessly between crowd-invigorating energy and earnest ballads. Joey involves the audience as a whole in the joy of his music, yet also seems to perform for each person individually.
