There is more to being a band than just playing concerts and trying to get famous. For Footprints, a band is about personal relationships and life experiences. These are the fundamentals of life, and thus, the fundamentals of music. The traditions of jazz can be quite binding, especially in today's institutional world where the school churns out more 'musicians' than there are venues to play at. In listening to this group, you will hear five artists breaking free and playing with surprising maturity. When You Dream is the first recorded documentation of many years of growth and music. It features eight original compositions by rising-star trumpeter Christoph Siegrist (winner of the Montreux Chrysler Award) and saxophonist Joshua Kwassman, and one tribute to the great Miles Davis, from whom the spirit of the group was inspired. From start to finish, the music twists and turns to reveal many sides of thought and experience. First Flight, the opening track, is a song about a first plane experience, but also about the first moments of flight in one's life. It comes with joy and wonder, as well as fear of flying too high or of losing momentum. Following this moment, the album follows a path of biographical sketches about traveling and natural wonders, as well as pondering on the meaning and weight of time in society ('Of Time'). On the title track, 'When You Dream', you will hear first an extraordinary and deeply somber piano exploration by pianist Ortiz, as well as tour de force performances by all members of the group from start to finish (drummer Muschler drives and powers a breathtaking solo at the end). Other highlights include "His World Unheard", a musical journey into the mind and heart of a great artist (featuring an extended trumpet solo by Siegrist and a musing by Ortiz, reminiscent of rain lightly falling into a still pond). Listeners will also be delighted and surprised by 'Welcome to the Blue World', a composition of Siegrist's featuring an infectious groove and joyful harmony, challenging you to sit still. 'When You Dream' is a promising start by a new group in jazz. Featuring Christoph Siegrist on Trumpet ("creative and strong"), Joshua Kwassman on Saxophone ("will be one of the new jazz greats"), Fabian Ortiz on Piano, Peter Yuskauskas on Bass, and James Muschler on Drums and percussion, there is astounding chemistry in the group and a driving energy throughout.
