Below is our first official interview by Smoothietunes.com Naomi Rahj is a singer that blooms out of your speakers. Her music is a place so private and intimate that you feel like it should only be shared with close friends. It’s music you fall into, textures that are so cozy that they’re almost impossible to climb out of. Which is cool because why would you want to leave when the vibes are this good? Having worked with the likes of Neguim Beats and Rosevelt Company, Naomi’s music is already captivating any listener lucky enough to discover it. We got the chance to speak with her about inspiration, music, and upcoming projects. Q: First things first you have one of the most incredible voices I’ve heard in the longest time, like, how did that happen? Do you have any musical training? [Laughs] Yeah right!! But thank you that made me smile. But yeah, how it happened? It didn’t really “Happen” you know, it kind of fell into place for me. I do not have any musical training, but I always thought it would be nice though. I wish I could play an instrument to look cooler lol but ohh well maybe later. Q: The way you turn a phrase really puts people in their feelings. How much emphasis do you put on melody or lyrics when you sit down to write a song? Do you prefer one over the other? All I want to do is get better at writing or find a great team that can. I admire singers that write their own sh*t though. Like, its just soo impressive. I loveeeee creative people. I just sit there sometimes listening to all these d**e a** beats just wishing I could step into another part of my brain and just kill sh*t.When the beat is d**e, I get sooo happy!! because I feel its so rare to find producers with that “Different” flavor. But yes, I try to really say so much by not really saying sh*t at all. Most of the time I ask myself before I start writing like ..if someone was singing to me right now, what would I like to hear? Like what would make me kind of smile.[Laughs] Is that weird? Q: You’re most recent hit “Blooming” is d**e! Can you talk about that record? How did it come about? Thank you!! Yeah I found the instrumental on NegiumBeats. One of my absolute favorite producers!! I recorded it at House studios which was my first time recording a full song with just me in it. When I first got there it was just me, Rosevelt and David Knocks. The less people present, the better. I only had like a few sentences written down and I knew it wasn’t going to be enough so I was so nervous! But when I heard the finish draft, I wanted to cry. It wasn’t even finished it was just a very beautiful experience for me because all of this was just an idea at first now I get to hear a professional version of my own song! Which is a cool feeling because although I am no where near where I want to be, I can still feel myself graduating to the next level. I really wouldn’t go to another studio because I love everyone that works there! Q: You’ve lived in a number of different places. Has this affected your music in any way? Hmm .. I never really thought about that, but yeah in a way because I have so many memories of me saying my goodbyes often and not really sticking to the same thing. Not staying in the same spot for too long. My music kind of changes up just like that. Q: What about PG-13? What was that experience like, being so young and in a group? I loved PG-13. We even made our own clothing to record ourselves in which was basically a shirt cut in half to make a top and skirt. It actually worked though. It was me, my sister and my two childhood best friends Kelly and Nashla, we didn’t really sing much but we did make lil “dance” home videos. It was just a fun thing to give ourselves since we were always together anyways. Nothing really serious and I don’t even think it was my idea to create a group, I think it was Kelly’s. I wonder if she still has the home videos of us in the outfits [laughs]. Q: I’ve noticed you usually work with other producers. Have you ever thought about starting production on your own, or do you prefer the collaborative process? The closest I got to making my own beats was this little application on my brother’s Apple computer called GarageBand. It was all I had at the time to help me continue to post some music here and there but I felt like it was still nothing to stop everything you’re doing to listen to it. But it doesn’t hurt to just work with what you have for a little bit. I like collaborating with producers that have more than one sound. I just laid my vocals over an instrumental made by Chris Beatz which is so so cool to me! Another producer, Ezr0 Marei and I have a few hits in the making! I am excited to work with more people in the future and even more excited to start getting a team together so we can f**k sh*t up! [Laughs] One day… Q: Your music reminds me very much of Gemini’s. Very airy and free-spirited, open yet very visibly reserved. Is this a vibe you carry in life or just in music? Ayyyyye Team Gemini!! Yes, that’s me!! It’s actually my birthday today! No lie I share the same birthday with Kanye West. And that’s something I say with pride, it’s just so cool to me. As long as I stay positive outside of my room, then I am good. Q: Ah, no way. Well, happy birthday! Musicians in 2 0 1 5 have to balance being internet personalities and live musicians. How do you balance your URL and IRL career? Omg I’ve asked myself the exact same thing. Like who do I introduce myself as when I meet new people? It’s just something I will have to work on. Q: Can you talk about your upcoming projects? I know you just dropped your first music video? Yes! My very first music video ever has just dropped! I can’t believe I have my own music video! Thank You DJ FAM for being soo awesome with us!! Feel free to check it out, spread the love xoxo! Q: Any final thoughts or shout outs? Thank you Smoothie Tunes so much for giving me some recognition! means so much to me! I also want to thank Rosevelt for making all of this happen, I love you!! And negiumbeats for making d**e sh*t, and DJFAM for making a very beautiful music video and House Studios for being so good to me, thankyou guys so much!
