简介
A rock n’ soul band of square pegs making music for other square pegs. Black Giraffe appreciates the one guy dancing like no one’s watching in a crowd full of overly self-conscious people seemingly trapped in the tiny town from footloose. This band aims to turn everyone in the audience into Kevin Bacon by mixing Soul, R&B, rock, afrobeat, and any rhythm that moves people with an experimental pop palette to turn inward people out. They make grimy pop/soul records. Broken, and glued back together in a way that makes them better, lived in, punch drunk. In the words of The Weekly Volcano’s Adam McKinney “As much as Black Giraffe embraces soul and funk, they tear down and rebuild these influences into fractured nuggets of pop, songs that stutter as much as they strut, finding interesting excursions and experimental shifts along the way.” McKinney goes on to describe their music as “Marked by stop-start dynamics and Andy Ayers' confidently soulful croon... with drumming that's simultaneously tricky and utterly compelling, reminiscent of the National's drummer, both fascinatingly precise, and with a predilection for unconventional patterns.” Picture a slinky moving down a staircase, a little wobbly, not the most graceful sight, but surefooted in it’s movement and joyful to it’s core. Jonathan Zwickel, music editor for City Arts Magazine said of the band's debut “ Drunk Tank Pink fills a void in Seattle’s crowded music scene: slick rock ’n’ soul with equal parts groove and intellect, ambition and ability, landing somewhere between the Foster the People and the Black Keys. More than most young bands in town, these guys are ready for prime time.” Black Giraffe was started in 2014 by Andy Ayers (Guitar, Vocals, Bass, Keys) with the help of occasional drummer and permanent brother Don Ayers. Their first EP Field Test began as an experiment in creating fun danceable music with depth after years of making more introverted fair. Their Debut LP Drunk Tank Pink firmly established the band as a cross genre chimera in the worlds of Soul, Funk, and Rock. Now with the release of the Talk Cheap EP the group have further honed their jagged soul sound by adding Lauren Wells on violin, keys, and vocals, and Ben Rudd on drums. In addition to crafting Indie R&B hits the members of Black Giraffe have composed symphonies performed across the country, pursued bandits in boxers, been investigated by the FBI, played Carnegie Hall and shared the stage with Boxed In, Efterklang, Ian MacKaye, The Bad Plus, Ayron Jones, Computer Magic, and Alpine.
