简介

A snapshot can make a moment in time live forever. But what makes a moment in time special enough to be captured and celebrated? I view this project as a snapshot of sorts. No special significance, just a decision to capture a feeling. What made it so significant for me was the magical collection of people who worked on this project with me and poured their hearts and souls into it. The sounds that we captured in those moments, with those individuals, will now live forever. In the process of working on this recording I suddenly recalled a time, years ago, when I overheard a producer describe me as a “melodic composer.” I never heard it put that way before and wondered to myself, “Isn’t every composer melodic? What about my rhythm and my harmony? I put a lot of work into those too.” Yet, thinking about it some more, it struck me how accurate that description was. Suddenly it became clear as a bell that everything in music is, in its own way, melody: Melody is MELODY Harmony is MELODY Bass is MELODY and, yes, Rhythm is MELODY. That notion guided me in creating this recording. In the process I made new friends and deepened my connections with friends of long standing. What an emotional process. What a wonderful trip! —Adi Yeshaya To the long list of fabulous musicians and engineers who blessed this project with their soulful artistry: • Jeff Bailey: Long before your immense musical contribution to this album, it was your idea that sparked this adventure. Thank you bro! • Michael Baker: The Atlantic Ocean didn’t keep us from collaborating on this record. Your contribution, advice, and support are so very present on this record! • Cory Wong: Each time I get to work with you I learn something new. I look forward to more of that in the future. Great playing on this project! • Kevin Washington: Thank you for bringing your signature sound to this record. The tune Kevin’s Beat is dedicated to you! • L.A. Buckner: You are a born leader and on Shammer Jam, you showed all of us the way to go. Beautiful work sir! • Michael B. Nelson: You and I have shared the stage on many occasions over nearly three decades, but our recent collaborations revealed to me the limitless depth of your musicianship and skills. Thank you for your talent and for recruiting the Hornheads to this project! • Hornheads – Kathy, Dave, Kenni, Steve & Michael: No words can describe what a trip it is to work with you — but “Chain of Fools” comes close. (You know what I mean) • Wade Clark: Thanks for your bass trombone voice, adding some nice, fat bottom to Shammer Jam and Kevin’s Beat. Solid as it gets! • Omid Hutter: Ever since I met you, each time I hear the word “soul,” your face pops into my head. Excellent work, my friend! • Willie Murillo: Hours before writing these words, you and Becky were blessed with a baby Murillo. Congratulations to both of you and thank you for your beautiful sound! • Chuck Lazarus: What a great honor it is to feature you and your artistry on my composition. Beautiful work! • Mark Henderson: Your multifaceted talent never ceases to amaze me. You really brought it to this recording! Thank you for wearing many hats in this project, and for the fun alto flute solo! • Dave Karr: Your musical gifts have blessed many ears for a long time. Having you play on this record was very special. Thank you, Dave! • Peter Wertheimer: Among my early experiences as a young, aspiring jazz musician, it was your mentorship and friendship that opened my ears and mind to an invaluable lifelong vision. I am forever grateful! • Rebecca Arons: The many sessions we collaborated on over the years led us to form STRINGenius! May this partnership continue for a long time! Thank you for your contribution to this project and for the amazing orchestra you contracted! • David Louria: Our long friendship has produced a few very musical products — and now, this little jewel! Thank you, my dear friend, for your artistic vision that kept me honest throughout this project. Nothing was good enough until you said so! • Sean McMahon: As your colleague at McNally Smith College of Music I don’t get to see you in front of an orchestra very often. This was a special treat. Thank you Sean! • Tony Axtell: In my first years in Minnesota, much of my musical influence came from the East Coast. Our friendship, and the conversations and collaborations we had, exposed me to a different way of moving notes within the harmony. It was your strong West Coast roots. I can hear your influence in the tunes dulce y agrio and Pacific Bound. You brought to this project the perfect mixture of musicianship, skill, and love. Your final stamp of approval made it possible for me to let go... It’s time. Thank you my friend! • To the masters of sound: Steve Wiese, Miles Hanson, Jason McGlone, Rob Genedek, Steve Kaul, Chris Parks, and Tony Axtell: You played such a crucial role in shaping the sound of this recording. I am grateful to each and every one of you! • Dave Graf: Thank you for your careful and sensitive editing of these liner notes. With just a subtle adjustment here and there, you managed to fine-tune and clarify my message without losing my voice. • To all the very kind KickStarter contributors: Although the project wasn’t funded, your faith in it encouraged me to carry on with the plan. Postscript The tune First Snow has a special meaning for me: It was written in the early 1980s as a class project at Berklee, a few years after my dear friend and mentor Peter Wertheimer introduced me to the artistry of Johnny Hodges with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The piece was written in that style as an alto feature with a big band. As the student-ensemble played my piece, I began to imagine how Peter would sound on this if he were featured in the Johnny Hodges alto sax role. Some decades later, working closely with saxophone master Dave Karr brought the piece back. This time I was hearing it with a different kind of treatment — featuring Dave on tenor, with a trio and orchestra. We had a beautiful session and Dave was at the top of his game, as usual. A few months later, on a visit to Israel, I crossed paths with Peter Wertheimer again. This provided the perfect opportunity to bring to life my old dream of featuring him on First Snow. His performance here sounded as if he were channeling Charlie Mariano. And so I bring you two versions of the piece, as performed by two very special artists. I think they serve as fitting bookends to this musical gathering. Song Titles: 1. First Snow (featuring Peter Wertheimer, Alto Sax.) 2. Shammer Jam (solos: Michael B. Nelson, trombone; Kenni Holmen, ten. Sax.) 3. Karr Trip (featuring Dave Karr, ten. Sax.) 4. dulce y agrio (solo: Kenni Holmen, ten. Sax.) 5.
