简介

ABOUT THE ARTIST and THE ALBUM Monday Midnite is an ideological, philosophical and spiritual lyrical powerhouse with one of the strongest vocal capabilities in the rap game. From Benin City to New York to Nashville to Los Angeles to Belgium to Britain to Poland to Latvia to Estonia to South Africa to Australia, and many places around the world, Monday Midnite has left his mark. He's an artist with no guile, straight to the core and speaks his mind on a range of issues from politics to history to religion without mincing words irrespective of the circumstance. Sojourning mostly in America and Europe for most of his life, he has suffered through the emotional pain of only having successes in musical genres that totally alienated his beliefs and lyrical prowess hence depriving him of writing about subjects that matters most to him, i.e. (1) the never-ending corruption of the government in his country of birth, Nigeria, (2) political and social ills in the world, (3) religious demagoguery and hypocrisy, racism, tribalism and all sorts of negative isms and schisms, etc, etc. For example, he wrote a devastating funky hip-hop jam in 1984 called "ONE LOVE RAP” based on one of his musical mentor's popular song ONE LOVE. A lot of critics praised the feat, as it was the first time a rapper took the chorus of a popular song and merged it into a formidable rap beat. But the talk of black and white unity and ONE LOVE FOR ALL in its lyrical contents wasn’t a subject that resonated very well with the powers that be at the time, so the record company sat on it and the song never got released. His song “DON'T TOUCH THAT DRUG” also met with the same fate in 1985. While most rappers were propagating and propping up the use of drugs, Monday Midnite attempted to, via this song, dissuade his brothers and sisters in the hood, and people everywhere from engaging in the self-destructive practice of drug addiction. But alas, the record company thought it was bad business to go against the powerful and lucrative illegal drug industry, so the release was canned. Songs like "LIVING IN UNITY", "LET'S BUILD A BETTER WORLD", "TAKE MY HAND, BE MY FRIEND", "IS IT WRONG?", which touched on the sensitive subject of black and white unity, didn't make it past the recording studio coz they were considered too utopian. However, he didn't have the same problem with what he calls "lyrically thoughtless songs" like "DO IT BIGGY BOBO" and "ROCK ME," his first two released singles, which did pretty well in Spain and Belgium. He also wrote, composed and produced such "lyrically thoughtless songs" as “SET ME FREE” for a CALIFORNIA rapper named SWEET P, and “IF YOU WERE HERE TONITE” for a TENNESSEE soul singer called DIANE BETTS. Both songs were released in America in 1990. His composition “YES, WE’RE TALL” kicked off the music careers of two ex-American basketball stars in Belgium, WILLIAM WRIGHT and GREG JONES who formed a formidable rap, soul and funk duo group with the same name as the song “YES’ WE’RE TALL.” The release party of the single saw them open up for one of the best soul singers in the world, CHAKA KHAN. WILLIAM WRIGHT later became BIZZ NIZZ and had a huge hit in Europe for BYTE RECORDS with “DON’T MISS THE PARTY LINE.” He’s still going strong as TOPAZZ in Spain. GREG JONES is still keeping the funk fire burning as well. Working as a Club DJ in the world famous ZILLION in BELGIUM in the late 90's, Monday Midnite’s CD's supplier, a Belgian record shop proprietor named STEVE, introduced him to a very popular European dance music producer called SERGE RAMAEKERS through whom he met two other producers (DANNY and PATRICK) who collaborated with him to make his first of four top ten JUMPER MUSIC hits with a group called DA RICK. "RUMBLE", the first single with DA RICK was a phenomenal smash in BELGIUM and HOLLAND, staying on the top ten charts for 8WKS and on the top 40 for almost six months. "ROLL THE DRUMS", the second single, entered the charts while RUMBLE was still in it. And during this period, ARS... the record company of one of the most successful techno music group TECHNOTRONIC, whose worldwide number one hit song "PUMP UP THE JAM" still rocks discotheques across the world, came knocking. They wanted Monday Midnite to become the new front man of TECHNOTRONIC after hearing the Euro-club dance jam he wrote, co-composed and performed, called "LIKE THIS." Rejecting the idea of his own artist name disappearing as part of the massively known TECHNOTRONIC, the record company agreed on his term to call the project TECHNOTRONIC featurin' MONDAY MIDNITE. "LIKE THIS", the project's first single, was internationally huge. It re-launched the group in the European top ten music charts and enjoyed successes in Canada, Australia, throughout Latin America, and it went NUMBER ONE in SOUTH AFRICA for many weeks. The follow up single THE G TRAIN enjoyed similar international success, but the third single "MARIACHI", featuring original vocalist of TECHNOTRONIC on PUMP UP THE JAM, was a disastrous flop, bringing an end to another TECHNOTRONIC saga. However, the company released another song "SHAKE YOUR BOOTY UP" that was meant for the TECHNOTRONIC project under the name MONDAY MIDNITE coz of his popularity with the public. It enjoyed mild success but attempts for a follow up didn't augur well with him as he was itching to record an album that reflects his beliefs, values and ideologies. To this aim, he bought a state of the art PRO TOOLS STUDIO and moved back to NEW YORK to begin work on the album. But family distractions impeded his work there and so when a childhood friend invited him to come to London and produce a gospel album for him, he saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. But mid-way through the projects, while he went on a little get-away trip across the channel in Belgium, thieves raided his studio and made away with all his equipments. He suffered the loss of almost Eighty Thousand Dollars in physical equipments and software plus invaluable amounts in creative work. However, this didn't deter him, coz, according to him, "If you are on the side of God and of good over evil, the adversary, satan, will do everything to cut you down. But I'm on a mission beyond music. My City, my State, my Country, my Continent, is drowning. I must throw in a life raft in my own little way, and hopefully motivate others to do the same. I must quickly pick myself up and get back on track coz I got work to do" This he did, coz less than a year after the heartbreaking loss of his studio, he teamed up with SERGE RAMAEKERS to record a EURO POP-FUNK version of CAMEO'S massive hit "WORD UP" under the name SEVEN-ELEVEN featurin’ MONDAY MIDNITE. It did well in DENMARK and SWEDEN. And with the acquired minor monetary resources, he quickly bought a portably equipped but adequate studio and began work on his “PISSY PISSY” album. After listening to the messages enshrined in the songs on the album, I truly believe that Monday Midnite is positively on a mission. The album tackles diverse subjects ranging from the plight of the CHILDREN OF WAR to the British atrocities in BENIN CITY in 1897, to Oprah Winfrey's negative views of his beloved country folks, to the perversion of the true gospel of Christ by many preachers... etc, etc. This body of work lyrically takes the mind on a refresher course on what rap music was originally meant to be-----a tool for social emancipation, a voice for the suffering masses, a cry against injustice, a plea for equal rights, love, peace and unity. This album embodies all. Monday Midnite has also teamed up with his long time friend, KAY KOOL, to form a duo group called ZERO TOLERANZ, a ‘take no prisoner’ act on a relentless musical campaign against bad government in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Watch out for their first single " WE NO GO GREE" Not too shabby for a an artist whose musical journey began in the ancient city of Benin as the youngest regular artist on NTA Benin's popular entertainment program called MUSIC PANORAMA, alongside artists like KRIS OKOTIE (now a Preacher), EMMA OGOSI, ENO LOUIS, EHI DUNCAN, FELIX LIBERTY, to mention but a few. Yes, not too shabby indeed for the former Bendel State number one DJ whose long time friend, MAJEK FASHEK's early studio experiences were singing hooks on his rap demos.
