简介

Earlier this year, Kyle Szmurlo left Chicago for Los Angeles, intent to surf and be close to the ocean. Before leaving, he co-produced “Tape Replay” with Mazi (Audio Soul Project) and Nathan (Drew Larsen) from Fresh Meat. That recording caught the attention of the music press, including XLR8R, and DJ’s such as Jimpster, Funk D'void and Laurent Garnier. Kyle’s debut EP, found here, features two analog gems, “Pancakes” and “In Between”. The release includes U.S. remixes by two of today's most interesting post-house talents - Worthy of Dirty Bird and Leftroom Ltd and Fresh Meat's in-house wunderkind Nathan Drew Larsen. Kyle's original compositions are refined, yet sometimes shocking. On “Pancakes” (a real psychedelic floor-shaker) cascades of melodic arpeggios - courtesy of a reconditioned Jupiter 8 - interact to great effect with harmonization and reverb effects, a subsonic Minimoog bass, and Kyle’s intricate synthesized details. San Francisco’s glitch-virtuoso, Worthy, spent over a month in the studio reorganizing “Pancakes” into a perfect minimalist house-groove. Worthy takes “Pancakes” way deeper than most of his other work. The result is polished but frankly, twice as deadly on the dance floor. We simply cannot contain our excitement over this remix, which we think is his best to date. The second original track by Kyle, “In Between,” again weds emotive electronics with an unrelenting dance floor framework. Tight drums keep the tension against an arrangement that is organic, with crescendos and breakdowns sounding more liquid than sequenced. For his remix, Chicago's Nathan Larsen takes “In Between” and exposes it to his unique melodies and vintage instruments. Nathan’s beautiful, subtle and very personal sounding remix develops in a way that is psychedelic, house and pop all at once. Melodies and a chord progression from Kyle’s original, fed back through an old delay pedal, start the remix but after the drum cadence Nathan’s own bittersweet melodies take over, care of a Lambda and a Prophet 8. The result is dynamic and warm running against the current course of dance music, but may just be setting up for the next.
