I define “Digital Acoustic Violin” as a violin performance with planned and improvised melody, accompaniment, and song form created in real-time with a computer and foot pedals. When I start a performance, I have nothing prerecorded. Everything you hear is created live on an acoustic violin in a single pass. As I perform, I have the computer record musical phrases. Then, controlled by foot pedals, I decide which phrases to play back at which times. Learn more and see video at marshworks.com. 1 Starfire The piece with rhythmic delay was first performed as an improvisational duet with a dancer named Starfire in 1984. 2 Drowsy Maggie This traditional Irish fiddle tune opens with a percussion track created on the instrument. I improvise around a bluesy second melody. 3 Pachelbel’s Canon The bass part is produced by digitally transposing the plucked violin down 2 octaves. I can’t force myself to play Pachelbel’s melody straight. 4 Girl That Broke My Heart A traditional Irish tune, but I create a drone and my improvisations journey towards India. I use a bridge pickup instead of a microphone to get the ethnic sound. 5 Preludium Bach was well-known as an improviser, so I hope he would approve. I start with an abridged pizzicato rendition of Prelude in C Major for Well Tempered Clavier, and improvise three parts over it. 6 Tuning This ballad explores the possibilities of open strings. 7 Rollin I always wanted to be a rock-and-roll guitarist, and this is as close as an acoustic violin can get. I strum the groove and imitate a feedback lead guitar through bow placement. 8 Not for the Faint This gets crazy with violin tracks everywhere and more digital processing. Eleven tracks.
