Read the Red has taken about 10 years to complete. The first song written for the project was “Something Special”. The final song written was “Why Not Me”. In between a lot happened. Our family dealt with a lot of sadness, like losing my father and Janna’s mother. We also had many blessings. And I believe the songs definitely show that emotional ebb and flow. All the songs are sincere. They all have a special meaning to me and I think the lyrics and musical progressions reflect that. Unless otherwise noted I played all the instruments and sang all the vocals. My daughter, Madi, helped with some amazing background vocals. My other daughter, Chloe, played a few percussion tracks for me. It was so cool having them help me with this project. When I began writing for the project Chloe was 1 and Madi was 10. They are now 12 and 21 and no surprise that they are the source for a whole lot of the lyrics and music, as is my wife, Janna. I've played guitar and various other instruments my whole life. All over Austin and the Texas Hill Country and the Houston area. It's not my career. I actually work at a chemical plant. But I can't imagine having gone through life without music. I've heard good and I've heard bad (and I've probably written good and written bad). And the one constant (in my opinion) about good music is that it's sincere. And I hope that anyone who takes the time to listen to Read the Red will at the very least enjoy and appreciate the sincerity. If you are curious about the album name, my former pastor, Alan Anglin used to say "when in doubt just Read the Red and do what He said". Seemed like good advice to me.
