简介

Whether happenstance or intentional, many events have continued to send Julia Helen down the winding road of a career in songwriting. Born in Germany and raised in Europe and on the east coast, Julia discovers her musical muse through an initial love affair with the violin. Years later in her early teens, Julia picked up the guitar at an early age and hasn’t put it down since. Although a late bloomer when it came to performing, Julia was known, in her early years, to take the stage in the back seat of her parent’s orange VW bus, while traveling around the country with them. Julia’s public songwriting career began when she moved from Gainesville, Florida to her adopted hometown of Berlin, Germany in 1998 and took the stage at the singer/songwriter showcases at the Junction Bar, an intimate candlelit venue in the Kreuzberg district This is where she first developed her insightful storytelling, inspired by her own experiences as well as through the tales of others, and realized the powerful barriers that music could bend. After living in Berlin on-and-off for two years with brief stints in Poland, France and the east coast, Julia returned to Gainesville, finished college and moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 2002. In Tallahassee, Julia was welcomed by a flourishing musical community, whose members would prove to have profound influences on her songwriting. While performing in local haunts such as the Black Dog Café, Javaheads, and local festivals, she completed her first studio album “Amarillo” in late 2002. Following “Amarillo”, Julia took a vacation from recording and concentrated on performing, until the release of “Rascal Yard” in 2004, a compilation of music by Florida singer/songwriters to which she contributed “This House is Dark.” After living in Tallahassee for 3 delicious years, Julia completed graduate school in applied behavior analysis and braved the cold Washington D.C. area for new adventures. After a short, but eventful year, the nomadic roots of her growing up proved too enticing to resist, and she returned to Europe for 6 months to begin writing for a second album. In late 2005, Julia settled in Berkeley, California where she continues to write and perform in local venues. Julia’s colorful experiences resonate through her passionate vocals and intimate lyrics. Her poignant lyrics are flavored by themes of love, loss, resilience, overcoming difference, and the struggle to balance adventure while maintaining a sense of place. While working on her second studio album (to be released Autumn 2007), Julia continues to live in the San Francisco Bay area, hoping for words to abound and melodies to blossom.
