Living in Los Angeles and Raleigh, North Carolina. He studied Music and Business at Duke University, North Carolina Central University. Studied composition and arranging at Manhattan School of Music. Also entered Law school but found it a poor fit for his interests! At the young age of 18 and fresh out of high school, he finds himself invited by a friend to Englewood New Jersey. His friend suggests they go down to this studio, where Sylvia Robinson had recently started a Label, called Sugar Hill Records. As the story goes, Chip was told, “look.. we can go hang out there, and she’ll pay us $70 just to play whatever she needs.” On this particular day, Robinson walks in the studio with an idea for a song lasting nearly 15 minutes. She asks Chip if he can hold down this bass line without a mistake for that length. You can imagine the odd looks! The session starts, and Chip and the drummer hammer it thru on the first take! At the end of the session Chip asks, “Ms Robinson, what are you going to do with this..” She says.. “Well.. I have some kids that are going to just talk real fast over it...” I think at that moment, its safe to say, that Chip figured he’d made out better with his $70 bucks on that deal!
