简介

Achilles Liarmakopoulos - trombonist of the Canadian Brass - has given the trombone an entirely new voice in the music world.  Each piece of music he has selected for this recording elicits intense and passionate emotional responses.   Launching us directly into his world of music sensations, Achilles performs Paco Odeón.  Composed by Argentinian writer Gabriel Senanes, this was originally the title music for the 1990's Argentinian/Spanish film "Que Vivan los crotos" directed by Ana Pokiak.  Senanes’ title is a Spanish play on words using ‘Paco’, the nickname for Francisco, and ‘acordeón’.  Saying Paco Ordeón in Spanish sounds like ‘for accordion’. From Brazil Achilles next explores the music Agua e Vinho (Water and Wine) by Egberto Gismonti.  Not only is Gismonti one of today’s best known Brazilian musicians, this is likely his most famous composition. The composer has described this music as being inspired by the ‘mystery of Catholicism, life’s basic element, a beautiful and contradictory combination.’ Trombonsillo composed by Colombian pianist Carolina Calvache is crafted especially for Achilles in a traditional Colombian ‘Pasillo’ rhythm.  This style of music, which is similar to European waltz, succeeds in letting Achilles explore the lyrical and playful side of the trombone.  Nostos is an ancient Greek word used to signify one's homecoming after a long time of absence; hence the word 'nostalgia'. This piece carries that title since its melody and harmony set a nostalgic mood. Nostos was composed by Spiros Exaras specifically for this album. The work is dedicated to the refugees currently in Greece. Sleepwalker by San Francisco based composer Andrew Cadima evokes a meditative state.  Describing his work, Cadima said, “my hope with Sleepwalker was to create a piece of fleet, subconscious movement momentarily interrupted by the mindful, melodic intentions of a central march … a struggle between sleep & wakefulness and the ability to tell which is more existent.” It’s dedicated to the performers of the piece. Concerto pour une Voix (Concerto for one Voice) is a contemporary song written by the French composer Saint-Preux in 1969. Known as an extremely popular vocal piece sung by Daniele Licari in this version Concerto is reimagined for Achilles' trombone, guitar and cello by composer Spiros Exaras. Oscuro silencio is a ‘milango’, a genre created by its composer Gabriel Senanes that combines ‘milonga’ and ‘tango’. The members of the quartet that perform with Achilles for this recording are recognized as an elite group of the finest tango musicians in the world. One of these players, Fernando Suárez Paz, is celebrated as the legendary violin soloist in Astor Piazzolla’s own quintet. Master of Spanish composition, Enrique Granados wrote sixteen Tonadillas for piano and voice. His Tonadillas are settings of a group of poems by Fernando Perique Zuaznábar (1873-1946) that represent a genuine innovation in Spanish music -- the creation of a distinctively Spanish ‘Lied’.  Three often performed of Granados’ Tonadillas were selected for this album: Amor y odio (love and hate), El majo discreto (the discreet love) and La maja dolorosa n.2 (the sorrowful woman). Ethereal, the title song of this collection was composed by Carolina Calvache. This composition transports a delicate and passionate melody through diverse, unexpected musical impressions. It represents the search of one's thoughts that fly on the air with no real beginning or end.. This is a magnificent collection of passionately inspired compositions.  They will be played over and over, stimulating an entirely new perspective on the ETHEREAL nature of each one of these great works of art, now conveyed to the world through Achilles’ exceptional sensitivity.
