His recordings and performances reveal a masterful technician; but his sound is difficult to categorize so neatly. Even when ArtForum International placed Sholar high in the ranks of the Best Of Music as an "exceptional producer and keyboardist” the most they could do was to compare him to Cecil Taylor fused with Kevin Saunderson; Sholar is a living unicorn. Despite the categorical problems of description, Kelvin Sholar’s unique sound is showcased brilliantly on this new release “New Detroit”. “New Detroit” documents a live performance of Kelvin Sholar and Group at Ritter Butzke in Berlin in 2012, as featured artists during Berlin Music Days, Berlin’s best music festival. The concert was subtitled “XO: crossing the boundaries of jazz, classic and electronic” and it featured the music of Sholar, Jeff Mills, Rob Hood and Juan Atkins. This album lives up to this subtitle because it presents a vision of music that is rarely achieved, if ever. What makes this music totally different is its bold execution of a broad spectrum of sound; it presents a real fusion of various stylistic elements, not an unfulfilled promise of one. In “New Detroit”, Contemporary Jazz and formal techniques of Classical music coexists with Classic Minimal Detroit Techno. “New Detroit” is a multimedia and multisensory experience. A live album recorded, mixed and mastered by master engineer Christoph Schlimbach that is accompanied by music videos of the live performance produced by Andreas Plata. This way we are all invited to join the audience and experience the performance live. The first four songs of “New Detroit” (i.e. “Red”, “Orange”, “Blue-Indigo” and “Orange-Yellow”) are one-third of “The Kalavan Suite”, Sholar’s original work conceived according to new compositional concepts. These songs feature Sholar on piano, Jonathan Robinson on bass and Tobias Backhaus on drums taking leaps of creativity with bold stretches of imaginative interplay as they navigate through colorful jazz swing, synthetic clouds of strings, balkan rhythms and powerful grooves. The remainder of the album features Sholar’s live performance of classic Detroit techno, with Klaus Frauenholz on additional electronics: Jeff Mill’s “Wrath Of The Punisher” and “Changes Of Life”; Rob Hood’s “The Protector”, “Museum”, and “Station Rider E”; Juan Atkin’s “Starlight”, and “Technicolor”. The set is created from scratch, there are no overdubs, and no prerecorded songs, only a piano, electric piano, synth, drum machine and additional electronics. His electronic set features the same fresh improvisation that makes his jazz playing in the first set so strong, only using different instruments. Like the first set, the second is deep, fierce and soulful from the first moment; lovers of the dance floor with not be disappointed; Jazz-lovers will soar during Sholar’s mercurial live solos. As a bonus, Sholar and Frauenholz perform “K of 7”, a Sholar original, in the finale. What style of music is this? New Detroit!” Kasmavtsu Records 2013.
