简介
Several years after sneaking a short series of EPs into the internet, Joseph Morton returns with 6 tracks of future-retro electronics on his debut for [d]-tached records. A computer animator by trade, Morton is perhaps more used to making pixels dance than people, but it's music that has always been his first love. Full of squelching acid synths, 808 drum patterns and ghostly atmospherics, each track here builds harmonic layers as it connects and intersects with classic electronic sounds. Joe's influences from early pioneers such as Raymond Scott and Wendy Carlos are on full display on "In The Library" and "LEEP", where he embraces the innocent melodics, raw synthesised tones, and shuns the sometimes pretentious or elitist attitude that can be attached to those innovators - this is someone who wants to play in the past, and not just artfully respect it from a distance. These tracks serve as a counterpoint to the colder sounding "Nexszt" and title track "Split", which meld glacial electronics with propulsive layers of acid bass and beats. Elsewhere on the EP is a collaboration with fellow [d]-tached artist and label owner Bovaflux ("Meta"), a more calculated down-tempo track, which culminates in a typically 'fluxian melodic glitch out. Closing off the selection is "Voices", where analogue squiggles and fizzing synths pave the way for haunting, descending piano-like tones, whispers falling from another age. In some ways this exemplifies Morton's approach to electronic music, where timelines intertwine, and current trends can be overshadowed by antiquated innovation. About [d]-tached [d]-tached records is a tiny electronic label based in Cambridge, England, run by Eddie Symons. While over recent years it has mainly been an outlet for his own Bovaflux project (including 2012's Invariant album) this year [d]-tached will also be releasing projects by like minded artists. Following Joseph Morton's Split EP will be an EP from new discovery Supersentient Intelligence Construct.
