It all started in october 2009, in the echoey halls of a big white house on the outskirts of Guadalajara (México). The building that was once meant to lodge the school grounds for “La Experiencia” kindergarten was now the abode of Oscar and Fabian. The old practice space where they had met occasionally with Saul had recently been transplanted from the rooftop of a Cafe to one of the classrooms and now Juan Pablo and Federico had showed up to play. The floor was crowded with an assortment of musical toys and artifacts, and the walls were garnished with ornamental paraphernalia reminiscent of a Mexican mechanics shed. The birth account of Pumcayó re-enacts the typical band creation myth written upon the usual association lines (high school friends, relatives, sister's ex-boyfriends, etc.). The slightly atypical element of the story was the band's initial attitude towards their strikingly different musical backgrounds… What would have otherwise been prescribed as an inscrutable muddle of influences (which included jazz, psychedelic rock, trova, dub and progressive metal) began to take shape into a somewhat coherent mass, under a discreet force that provided the medium for congealment: their cultural heritage. "Pumcayó" is Spanish for "thump! (it/he/she) fell". The music crafted by the quintet borrows from a large collection of influences - some convergent, others divergent; some local, others remote -. Their sound touches on various contemporary folk acts like Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear, while also meandering into thicker territories with occasional nods to Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Radiohead. The strands are all held together by the glue of the band's indelible Mexican inheritance. The end result, much like Mexican handicrafts, is intricate, textured, colorful and raw.
