ALPS, an Indie-pop band from the MidWest USA, nestled between Chicago and Milwaukee are husband and wife duo, Matt & Bethany Gainsford. Meeting in 2009, after British-born, Matt came to the USA to study music and theology, their story is one of tragedy turning into testimony. Bethany was hit head on in a car accident in 2010, which nearly took her life. Bethany didn’t know if she would ever be able to play again. Fast forward to seven years later and the releasing of Under the Shadow is as much a story of redemption as it is continued recovery. The scars that we wear point to the fact that we survived and that we are still alive. Under the Shadow, produced by Joel Khouri (John Mark McMillan, Nathan Jess) and mixed by Jeremy Griffith (Kari Jobe, Paper Lights, Johnny Swim, Brian and Katie Torwalt), melds faith with atmospheric soundscapes, and heady, brooding lyricism. Two years in the making, Under the Shadow focuses on themes of rest, doubt, trial and hope. ALPS released two singles in early 2017, ASHES and WHY and have drawn comparisons to bands like London Grammar, Ben Howard and Daughter, with their ethereal vocals, immersive guitars and lush instrumentation.
