简介
This is a wonderful song written by my friend Don Oja-Dunaway. The story is told through the eyes of Samuel Watkins, a confederate soldier in the Civil War who kept a journal and after the conflict was over, published a collection of his memoirs in a book called "Co. Aytch", Maury Grays, First Tennessee Regiment, Or, "a Side Show of the Big Show" The chronicling of the Battle at Kennesaw Mountain and the death of his friend Walter Hood is what prompted this song. In the course of the song, there is mention of a whip-poor-will. Legend has it that the Whip-poor-will can sense a soul departing and some believe that the singing of the whip-poor-will is an omen of death.
