Composer Barry Anthony: "I've always wanted to write a spiritual work based on my lifelong interest in matters of the soul and, what seemed to me, it's voyage. Spirituality is a major part of my life and I try to always express a spirit in my music. However, I have never composed music about the spirit and it's voyage, directly. So, when Mary Sabol at the Wayfarer's Chapel in Palos Verdes, California, suggested that I perform a program of my own choosing, my creative ideas began to flow. I saw this concert as a chance to express these spiritual ideas in a very beautiful and architecturally inspiring place. Mary mentioned that this chapel was built by Frank Lloyd Wright and that it was, originally, built as a place of meditation and contemplation for the wayfarer. It is called the "Glass Chapel" because it is composed mostly of windows. Outside it's high glass walls, is a natural forest-like setting and the interior is of stone and wood. Truly, one feels closer to nature sitting in this place. I decided to make the wayfarer the theme for the work I would write. Life is a journey home, back to our highest selves, and in moments of meditation and music we might be reminded of this simple idea and continue our lives with a renewed sense of commitment. I wrote the piece for four musicians and a narrator who would recite the poetry. It would be completely orchestral and classical sounding. I wanted to create a guided meditation so that Frank Lloyd Wright's original vision of a place that would inspire spirituality, would be realized. We performed and recorded "The Wayfarer" on January 12, 1999 to a small group of friends and supporters. This recording was mastered and released in July of 1999.
